As you may all know, the Avengers: End Game premiere is this week. That got me thinking, while everyone has their own superpowers, what else is out there? The movies and comics portray a variety of superpowers: we have the extremely strong, the ones that can fly and the one that is super fast.

In this fast-paced world of ours, I thought of one superpower one would probably wish to have: being calm.

Changing your environment is great, but you can’t control the things that happen to you much of the time, and you certainly can’t control how other people act. The only thing you can control is your response — and this response matters.

It is easy to get upset and angry. It is so easy to get offended and take things personally, You know what isn’t as easy? Choosing to be calm, that’s what. Being calm does not mean you are weak. In fact, it is an incredible strength!

These are the 8 habits of calmness:

  1. A calm morning ritual
  2. Learn to watch your response
  3. Don’t take things personally
  4. Express gratitude
  5. Create stress-coping habits
  6. Single-task
  7. Reduce noise
  8. Disconnect from tech

Here are some reasons calmness is a superpower:

1. You have a peaceful center.

You understand that you have the ability to control your emotions. Before reacting to something that makes you angry, you choose to take a moment to create space between the act and your reaction. It is easy to be reactive, By doing so, you remain centered and balanced. It takes skill and practice to pause and choose the reaction that benefits you. By doing so, you remain centered and balanced, no matter what is going on around you.

2. You act when the time is right, or choose not to react.

People who are calm act when the time suits them best. They choose to take time to assess what the best course of action may be. When you are involved with someone who is full of emotions, you may notice yourself slowly losing yourself and being drawn into their drama. Your energy might match theirs. Rather than getting drawn and stooping to their level, take a step back to think it through. Revisit the other person when you are ready to talk it out when you are calm and can think straight. Or better yet, sometimes, the best reaction is no reaction at all.

3. You do not add fear and unease to others around you.

As a calm superhero, you are more approachable. Have you ever been around someone who is always hot-tempered? You would not want to stay around them as anything you say or do might make them angry. When you are calm, it makes it easier for others to greet you and talk to you without causing any fear or judgment.

Your ability to remain calm in any given situation is your greatest superpower. It allows you to see the situation with a clear mind and to choose how you wish to respond with your words and actions.
